Chittagong District Police Special Operation Arrests Mastermind of Planned Fire in Raozan Rangunia Residential House

Last December 2025, some miscreants committed arson in several residential houses in Raozan and Rangunia police stations area of ​​Chittagong district late at night. Some residential houses were partially damaged and some were completely burnt down. Banners made of plastic bags were recovered from the scene of the arson. The banners contained provocative statements to destroy communal harmony, names of some political leaders and more than fifty mobile numbers. The incidents of arson in residential houses by hanging banners in a planned manner in the dark of night are initially considered to be intentional and conspiratorial.
In order to investigate this incident and arrest those involved, on the basis of information, technical analysis and evidence, a case was registered on 02/01/2026 AD. At approximately 12.30 pm, a person involved in the incident was arrested from the College Gate area of ​​Rangamati Hill District.
During the arrest, 3 empty plastic bags were recovered from his residence, which completely match the banner recovered from the scene.
During interrogation, it was learned that a group of 15/16 people, under the plan of Lokman of Rangamati, former commissioner of Rangamati Municipality and a person from Raojan, planned to set fire to the residences of Hindus and Buddhists in different parts of the country and to set fire to the residences of the hill community. Along with this, conspiratorial banners were put up to create confusion and fear in the public mind.
The investigation further revealed that through these incidents, on the one hand, a conspiracy was hatched to create communal tension in the country and on the other hand, a conspiracy was hatched to create confusion in the international arena by spreading propaganda about the persecution of minorities in Bangladesh and to put the government in trouble. In addition, the names and mobile numbers of some people were also attached to the banner due to the family dispute and vindictive attitude of the arrested accused Monir.
Based on the information and evidence received from the accused Monir, the arrested accused are: 1. Monir Hossain 2. Mohammad Omar Faruk 3. Mohammad Kabir Hossain 4. Kartik Dey 5. Biplob Barua 6. Mohammad Lokman and 7. Md. Parvez.
From the scene and the custody of the accused, provocative banners-4, kerosene oil containers-2 recovered from the scene which are found to be similar to the containers of the kerosene oil purchase shop. Kerosene oil bottle-1 was recovered from under the bed of the CNG driver’s residence which was used in the previous incident. Kerosene oil-1 lungi and oil-1 old black shirt which were recovered from the first scene. Empty plastic bags-3 which were recovered from the house of accused Monir which were found to be similar to the plastic bags recovered from the scene. Mobile phone with the mobile numbers mentioned in the banner-1 and CNG-powered auto-rickshaw-1 and motorcycle-1 which were used for movement at the scene were recovered.
According to the information obtained during the initial investigation, the role of those involved in the incident: The name of the main planner and one who actively led the incident is found. He is involved in the local nursery business and has played an active role in creating social unrest by setting fire to the homes of Hindu, Buddhist and hill communities. The name of a person living in Rangamati is found as the coordinator of the plan implementation. He ensured the implementation of the arson incident by communicating with other associates and traveling to the scene and providing assistance. Information is available regarding the former commissioner who supported the banned organization who provided financial support to the people concerned in the implementation of the said plan.
Arrested accused Monir participated in the said plan due to family disputes and the temptation of receiving a large amount of money and is known to have played an active role in setting fire to several houses of Hindu and Buddhist communities along with other accomplices as per the pre-plan.
Arrested accused Monir has already admitted responsibility for the incident and given a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code in the learned court. According to the information given by the detainees, the police operation is continuing to arrest other accomplices.
Chittagong District Police firmly states that any attempt to set fire, incitement and destroy social harmony will be strictly suppressed and the District Police is determined to ensure that all those involved in such crimes are brought to justice.
