A discussion meeting was held in Narayanganj at the initiative of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) to prevent industrial pollution and proper waste management. The meeting was held at Ali Ahmed Chunka Nagar Library and Auditorium on Wednesday (August 27) morning.
Narayanganj City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Zakir Hossain was present as the chief guest at the meeting. He said that a plan has been taken to set up a Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) to prevent industrial pollution. In addition, various private initiatives including rooftop gardens will also be given priority. People are dumping waste directly into the drain, which is terrible for the environment. It is important to ensure awareness from now on.
BELA Program Coordinator AMM Mamun said that the Shitalakshya River is currently the third most polluted river in the country. Due to the pressure of industrialization and the establishment of uncontrolled factories, about one percent of agricultural land is being lost in Narayanganj every year. Deputy Director of the Environment Department AHM Rashed said, “Except for 42 institutions, the rest have established ETPs. However, many factories are running without licenses. A task force needs to be formed to control industrial pollution.”
BiWTA Joint Director Muhammad Ismail Hussain said that more than 30 institutions in the city are dumping waste into the canals, which later mix with the rivers. The rivers are still alive because of the people’s voice.
National River Protection Commission Assistant Chief Ahmad Shams Qadir believes that pollution cannot be prevented without changing the mindset of industrial owners and using modern technology.
Water Development Board Executive Engineer Shuvo Ahmed said that the flow of water in the canals is being obstructed due to unauthorized bridges and waste. Nine canals have already been re-excavated and initiatives have been taken to establish CTPs.
LGED Upazila Engineer Yasir Arafat He said that it is not possible to stop waste production, but its proper management is essential. A road carpeting project has been undertaken by recycling plastic waste.
Additional Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension Md. Zahirul Haque said that more than the tolerable level of cadmium is being found in vegetables in Narayanganj. This is reducing the productivity of agricultural land and heavy metals are entering the human body through food.
Director of Narayanganj Chamber Sohel Akhtar said that religious representatives and the youth should be involved in waste management. No project is approved without ETP.
BGMEA Senior Assistant Secretary Syed Ahmed Ali and Industrial Police-4 Narayanganj Senior Assistant Police Superintendent Mohammad Waliullah, Chairman of the Environment Protection and Development Society Md. Hossain also spoke at the meeting.
Overall, the speakers said that the environment, agriculture, health and rivers are being severely damaged due to industry and urbanization. If strict steps are not taken now, a terrible situation will be created in the future. Will be.
