180 policemen leave for Kinshasa to join UN peacekeeping mission

A formed police unit of Bangladesh Police left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 1:45 am on Tuesday (August 26) to join the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The contingent of 180 members, including 70 women police members, is led by Superintendent of Police Jannat Afroz.
Additional IG (Crime and Operations) Khondaker Rafiqul Islam, BPM, PPM, DIG (Operations) Md. Rezaul Karim and officials of the UN Operations Wing of the Police Headquarters bid farewell to the mission-bound peacekeepers at the airport.
The Bangladesh Police’s Formed Police Unit (FPU) has been serving in the Democratic Republic of Congo with professionalism since 2005 and the women’s contingent since 2011.
It is worth noting that the Bangladesh Police’s march in the UN peacekeeping mission began in 1989, in the Namibia mission. Currently, 215 members of the Bangladesh Police are serving in the UN peacekeeping mission. Of these, 178 are in the FPU mission and 37 are Individual Police Officers (IPOs). 75 female police members of the Bangladesh Police are deployed in peacekeeping missions. Of these, 68 are in the FPU mission and 7 are in the position of Individual Police Officers (IPOs).
21,816 members of the Bangladesh Police have returned home after serving in peacekeeping missions with great efficiency and reputation. 24 fearless members of the Bangladesh Police have sacrificed their lives in peacekeeping in different countries of the world.
The unique contribution of the Bangladesh Police in international peacekeeping operations through the implementation of the UN mandate has brightened the country’s image in the global arena.
