The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) commenced on September 8, 2026. The General Debate is set to begin two weeks later, on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.

Leaders will gather in New York to discuss solutions to the world’s most pressing global issues, ranging from climate change to global health, peace, security, and humanitarian assistance. During this year’s UNGA 81, the race for the position of UN Secretary-General will be a focal point of discussion, as momentum builds toward selecting the organization’s next leader.

Overview

The 81st session of the UN General Assembly will once again bring world leaders together to revitalize global cooperation, provide significant momentum to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and act as a driving force for collective action toward peace, dignity, and equality on a healthy planet. Two major platforms will highlight activities and solutions: the flagship SDG Media Zone, produced by the UN Department of Global Communications, featuring dynamic interviews and panel discussions on SDG solutions from September 21–25; and the ‘Goals Lounge’—convened by the UN Deputy Secretary-General and organized by the UN Office for Partnerships from September 14–25—featuring spontaneous dialogues, in-depth analysis of key issues, and participatory experiences. These events will be broadcast live on UN Web TV.

General Debate

In the General Debate—the annual gathering of Heads of State and Government at the start of the General Assembly session—world leaders deliver statements outlining their positions and priorities amidst complex and interconnected global challenges. H.E. Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh will preside over the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, the theme of which is “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A UN that Works for All.”

Ambassador Luis Suarez stated at the UN that it is an honor for him to be present at the UN Headquarters in New York for such a significant event as the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). He welcomed all the distinguished leaders—including ambassadors, ministers, and presidents—attending this 2026 session.
