Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman meets Indian Foreign Minister, Oil and Natural Gas Minister

Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman met Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Oil and Natural Gas Minister Mr. Hardeep Puri in New Delhi today. Prime Minister’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs Mr. Humayun Kabir and Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Mr. Riaz Hamidullah were present at these meetings.

After reaching the Indian capital, they also held a meeting with India’s National Security Advisor Mr. Ajit Doval yesterday evening.

During the discussions, both sides emphasized the importance of taking forward bilateral relations between the two countries in various fields. They also discussed important regional and international issues.

Dr. Rahman said that the newly elected BNP government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will follow the ‘Bangladesh First’ policy and its foreign policy based on mutual trust, respect and mutual benefits.

Dr. Rahman thanked the Government of India for the arrest of the suspected killers of Shaheed Osman Hadi. Both sides agreed that the arrested persons would be sent back to Bangladesh in accordance with the procedures stipulated in the extradition treaty between the two countries.

The Bangladesh side reiterated its request for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina and her Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who were sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal, to Bangladesh.

During the discussions, Minister Jaishankar said that the process of Indian visas, especially medical and business visas, for Bangladeshis would be facilitated in the coming weeks.

Dr. Rahman thanked Minister Hardeep Puri for the recent supply of diesel to Bangladesh by India and requested to increase the supply of diesel and fertilizer. Minister Puri indicated that the Government of India would consider this request with pleasure and favourably.

Both sides also agreed to discuss important bilateral issues.
